The White House on Thursday unveiled US President Joe Biden’s plan to share the Covid-19 vaccine with the world. Under this plan of the Biden administration, 75 per cent of the additional doses will be supplied through the ‘Covax’ initiative run in collaboration with the United Nations.
US Vice President Kamala Harris has spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this. India will also be given help under the initiative of America.
The White House previously said it intended to share 80 million doses of the vaccine with the world by the end of June. The Biden administration has said that an additional 25 per cent of the doses will be reserved for emergency and direct shipping to allies.
India will also get help
America will give these doses to countries like India and neighbouring Canada, seeing the bad situation due to the epidemic. Of the first 2.5 crore doses, 1.9 crores will go to Coax. Of these, 6 million to South and Central America, 7 million to Asia and 5 million to Africa. Biden said more than six million doses would be shared with Canada, Mexico, India and Korea.
Vaccine demand is low in America
This much-awaited plan has been launched amid declining demand for the vaccine in the US. More than 63 per cent of adults in the United States have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while there is a lack of access to vaccines in the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to US Vice President Kamala Harris, lauded the assurance given to India on vaccine supply as part of the US strategy for vaccine sharing globally.
