Why did China change its population policy?
The announcement that Chinese couples would be allowed to have three children made headlines in the media around the world, naturally. In India, where the demand for a population control law has been gaining momentum for quite some time now, this news must have shocked the common people.
Most of the people who demanded this law argued that we should also have laws along the lines of China’s one-child policy.
Population growth was a problem at one time, but today China and most countries of the developed world are concerned about the declining rate of population, declining youth and the increasing number of elderly people and are trying to increase the population in different ways.
Why did China change its population policy?
According to the Seventh National Census, China’s population is 1.41178 billion, an increase of 5.8 per cent or 72 million compared to 2010. These do not include the population of Hong Kong and Macau.
According to this, the population of China has increased by 0.53 per cent compared to about 1.4 billion in 2019. In general, the figure is 1.41 billion, and China maintains the status of the most populous country, but it has the slowest rate of population growth since the 1950s. Their women have given birth to an average of 1.3 children in 2020.
If this rate continues, then the number of young people in the population will decrease, the number of old people will increase and at one time the population will stabilize and then start falling.
Why did China change its population policy?
China’s National Bureau of Statistics has said that increasing population average age will put pressure on long-term balanced development. According to a United Nations report, by 2050, China’s 44 million people will be in their 60s.
A report released by the United Nations in June 2019 says that the population in China will decrease and India will become the most populous country in the world by 2027.
China says that since the implementation of the one-child policy, it has been able to prevent about 400 million births. Once population control was beneficial for him, but now it has become a problem.
In fact, more youth means more hands to work and more elderly means more burden on the country.
Why did China change its population policy?
Today, many countries want freedom from the increasing population of the elderly and are adopting many policies for this. There is a steady decline in the birth rate across Europe. In many countries, the birth rate per woman has fallen far below the normal 2.1 per cent that is needed to sustain the current population.
For example, in Denmark, the birth rate has reached 1.7 and there have been various campaigns for some years to increase it. Given a large number of pregnancies on the couple’s holiday, the government also encouraged husband and wife to take a day off through an advertising campaign.
Why did China change its population policy?
The Italian government has announced to give agricultural land to the couple who have a third child. As of 2017 statistics, the population of Japan was 12.68 million. Due to the declining birth rate, the population of the country will fall below 100 million by 2050.
There are many incentives given to have more children. Coming to India, according to the 2011 Census, the youth under the age of 25 years constituted 65 per cent of the total population up to the age of 35 years. This proves that India is a young country.
The median age of India is also less than in many countries.
It simply means that while the developed superpowers of the world are on their way to old age, India is getting younger. But according to a 2018 report by the Union Health Ministry, by the year 2050, the number of elderly people in India will be three times more than today.
Obviously, the question which is in front of China and many countries of the world will also come before India. There is a need to be alert and active in that direction from now on.
